The School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the  University of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia is offering a full  PhD scholarship to both domestic and international applicants.


The PhD candidate is to conduct research in the areas of network  information theory and index coding. The candidate will by supervised  by Dr Lawrence Ong ( http://www.lawrenceong.com ).

Applicants are required to have achieved honours class one or have  other equivalent research based qualifications. The applicant is also  expected to have good knowledge in digital communications and coding  theory, a strong foundation in mathematics and be able to satisfy the  University's English proficiency policy.

The scholarship meets the full tuition fees and overseas student  health cover costs for a period of three years, as well as a  relocation allowance (up to AUD 2,020). It also provides a tax-free  living allowance of AUD 25,849 per annum (2015 rate, indexed  annually). All University of Newcastle students have access to a  minimum of AUD 1,500 per annum for research-related expenses and are  issued a new laptop on their commencement. The successful candidate  may also apply for a six-month extension to the scholarship on  research-related grounds.
