17th Annual Shannon Memorial Lecture @ UCSD
Erdal Arikan, Ph.D.
Professor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering
Bilkent University, Turkey
“Polarization and Source Coding”
Abstract:
This talk is an introduction to polar coding methods based on a phenomenon called polarization of entropy. Topics covered include polar coding for the Slepian-Wolf problem. We survey known results and point out some open problems.
Biography:
Erdal Arikan received his B.S. degree from the California Institute of Technology in 1981, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in 1982 and 1985, respectively, all in electrical engineering. Since 1987 he has been on the faculty of Bilkent University, Turkey. For his work on polar coding, he has been awarded the 2010 IEEE Information Theory Society Best Paper Award, the 2013 IEEE W. R. G. Baker Award, the 2018 IEEE Hamming Medal, and the 2019 Claude E. Shannon Award of the IEEE Information Theory Society. He is a fellow of the IEEE and a member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences.
