A PhD position in the area of quantum information theory is available at the Information Theory Section of Simula UiB, Bergen, Norway. The position is for a fixed-term period of four years, including one year (25%) of compulsory work (e.g., teaching, supervising).

Simula UiB is a research centre owned by Simula Research Laboratory and the University of Bergen. Simula UiB aims to increase the security expertise in Norway through research and education. For further details, see our webpage https://simula-uib.com. We have a solid background in coding, information theory, and communication theory, as well as many related areas. We mainly consider the research problems from the perspective of Information Theory. Currently, our research focus includes various topics in quantum coding and information theory, quantum private information retrieval (PIR), quantum error-correcting codes, fault-tolerant quantum computation, and quantum security- and privacy-preserving technologies in general.

The applicants must have excellent mathematical knowledge in probability theory, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics. A solid understanding of information theory and algebraic coding theory is a requirement. Experience or research work on one/several of the above research topics is an advantage.

Candidate Profile

We are looking for interested candidates who 

  • have completed, or are about to complete, a Master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, or a suitably related relevant field
  • has an excellent level of spoken and written English
  • possess good skills in interpersonal communication and academic presentation
  • have a high willingness to work with the supervisors, as part of an international team
  • have an excellent academic track record and will be looking for publications in relevant venues
