Biography

Wai Ho Mow received his PhD degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and is currently with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). His research interests are in the areas of wireless communications, coding and information theory. He pioneered the lattice approach to signal detection problems, including sphere decoding and complex lattice reduction-aided detection, and unified all known constructions of perfect roots-of-unity sequences (or Butson-type circulant Hadamard matrices) which are widely used as preambles and radar signals. He published 1 book and over 200 technical publications, among which he is the sole author of over 40, and filed over 30 patents. His joint work won the top prizes of eight paper/technology competitions, incl. 2014 HK U-21 IoT Gold Award for Revolutional Concept. A novel 2D barcode, PiCode, developed by his HKUST Barcode Group was highlighted as one of the four local innovations in the 2015 International IT Fest organized by the Office of Government Information Officer. He was the program co-chair of six conferences, the treasurer of ISIT’2015 in HK, and is  a general co-chair of SETA'2018 in HK. He is a past chairman of the Hong Kong Chapter of the IEEE Information Theory Society. He is currently an Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications and  was a guest/associate editor for several special sections of the IEICE Transactions on Fundamentals . During 2003 to 2008, he was a member of the Radio Spectrum Advisory Committee, Office of the Telecommunications Authority, the Hong Kong S.A.R. Government.
